Empathy is the foundation of successful branding because it helps us create designs that genuinely resonate with people. By putting ourselves in our clients' shoes, we can create visuals and brand elements that feel authentic and true to their mission. Empathy gives life to our designs, ensuring they speak to audiences on a meaningful level.
A Lesson in Empathy from a Benefit Show
Last year, I had an experience that reminded me just how much empathy matters—not just in business but in everyday interactions. I was playing a benefit show with a friend, giving my time for free to support the cause, as I had recently lost my job. When I arrived, one of the event organizers laughed and said, “Oh, you’re just here for a free meal?” because I hadn’t purchased the $150 ticket. What they didn’t know was that I had committed to donating $100 after the show and was happy to lend my time and talent to the event.
It stung to be met with a lack of empathy, especially in a space intended for giving back. To add to the challenge, I have Celiac disease, so my only option to eat during our break was salad. In that moment, a little empathy would have gone a long way—the organizer would have understood that I’d invested hours in rehearsals and was there to give, not just to receive.
Building Empathy Through Listening
This experience reinforced that listening is where empathy begins. Just as it’s essential in personal interactions, listening plays a huge role in branding. When we work with a client, we start by understanding their story, their challenges, and their goals. This way, we can create a brand presence that doesn’t just look great but truly reflects their journey and aspirations.

Whether working with clients or building relationships in life, empathy helps us understand one another, recognize challenges, and celebrate accomplishments. It’s a quality that enriches both our work and our personal lives.
